This go around of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event just doesn’t have the same sizzle as The Last Time Is Now did.
The John Cena retirement match drove plenty of interest for the December 2025 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, so it’s unrealistic to think WWE has a chance of outdoing that show in any way. The thing is, it doesn’t seem like the company is trying all that hard with this one.
I mean, just a little effort. That’s not a lot to ask is it?
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on January 24 emanates live from inside the Bell Centre in Montréal, Québec, Canada. The show is headlined by a fatal four-way main event with Undisputed WWE Championship implications at the Royal Rumble.
Randy Orton is the safest bet
After winning qualifying matches the last couple weeks on SmackDown, Randy Orton, Damian Priest, Sami Zayn, and Trick Williams will collide on Saturday and the winner will get a shot at Drew McIntyre and the Undisputed WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble.
Look, there isn’t a reason to think this match is going to be bad. Sami Zayn wrestling in Montreal is going to guarantee a hot crowd. It’s a SmackDown main event, though. Nothing about this one screams “special.” It screams “we need content for another show that we are getting obscene fees for.” That’s the point of Saturday Night’s Main Event after all.
Anyway, I’m looking at Randy Orton for this win. Conventional wisdom would say that Zayn would win in his hometown, but booking that way would remove the Zayn card from the Royal Rumble match. WWE is smarter than that.
From The Takedown On SI
Orton is the guy. He’s a big enough name and gives McIntyre a marquee opponent for the Royal Rumble. At the same time, he’s a guy that McIntyre can easily beat without issue and without throwing a booking wrench into future plans.
Orton vs. McIntyre isn’t the most exciting match in the world, but the Royal Rumble doesn’t need premiere championship matches because it’s the Royal Rumble. Orton makes sense here inside of that reality.
Why are we doing this?
WWE has also chosen to drop in the Cody Rhodes vs. Jacob Fatu match that nobody wants to see on this card. I hate this match.
Rhodes is the babyface face of the company and Fatu is an up and coming star that turned babyface right before he got hurt. Why in the world would you want these two wrestling one another?
Fatu costing Rhodes the Undisputed WWE Championship was bad enough, but this is just silly.
Don’t expect a finish in this one. Neither Rhodes nor Fatu can take a loss at this very moment, so you’re looking at a brawling count out finish here. I’m asking the same question you’re asking? Why saddle yourself with this match when the plan is to not deliver an actual outcome?
Match of the night
The match of the night? The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match between Judgment Day and Rhiyo. Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky, Roxanne Perez, and Liv Morgan all in the same match? Too much talent there to be bad.
