Mercedes Mone is back.
This is good news for AEW. Not only is Mone one of the most important stars that the company has in it’s women’s division, but she’s one of the biggest stars in the company, period.
So, it’s odd to also say that Mone’s six-month AEW hiatus helped build to the one the match she has to have this year. Alas, I speak the truth.
Mercedes Mone vs. Thekla is the match Tony Khan must get done this year. That wasn’t a realistic opinion six months ago. It is now.
Absence creates opportunity
Thekla is the current AEW Women’s World Champion. She defeated Kris Statlander to win the championship in a Strap Match on an episode of AEW Dynamite in February. With Mone out of the picture, Khan was forced to present and showcase Thekla in an impactful way. Toni Storm being away helped in that effort too.
