-A pretty good tag match to open the show this week. Christian Cage, Adam Page, Jay White, and Juice Robinson all had good chemistry together and the action was crisp. The only negative about this match was the realization that AEW hasn’t gotten nearly enough out of Jay White. That guy is a premiere level talent — especially through the eyes of what AEW wants to be. He can work and he has unmatched charisma and aura. He’s like a heel Will Ospreay in that regard.
What’s the point???
-It’s insane to see Mercedes Mone run down Kamille the way she does now. What purpose does that serve? All it does is make Kamille look weak, which in turn, makes Mercedes look weak. Really bizarre character pivot there.
-The Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher face-off in the ring this week was the most compelling part of the show. Both took the feud to a very personal place with Ospreay even bringing up his son as a way to show just how close he was with Fletcher. It was also nice to see Ospreay call out Fletcher’s hypocrisy about not wanting to be Will Ospreay. This was intense, authentic, and it genuinely felt like these two hated the other. Thumbs way up.
-Real quick on Kyle Fletcher — the shaved head plays. Big time. Looks like a total different guy and bigger star with it. Little things matter.
-Geez, Lance Archer can’t even get a win over Roderick Strong these days? And as a newly minted member of The Don Callis Family? Yikes.
Takeshita wins now!
-Alright, time for a rant. Adam Cole loses to Konosuke Takeshita? After all the moments you had to give Takeshita a big win and you take this one? So what now? Adam Cole isn’t going to wrestle at all at Full Gear? Cole looks so weak in trying to desperately earn a match against MJF. Top stars get matches. The fact that he has to go through these silly hoops and then was beat out by Roderick Strong for the match is just silly if Cole is supposed to be a somewhat top guy. I have to think that Strong gives Cole his shot? Who knows and really, who cares at this point. The match itself was Cole’s best showing since returning. The finish? C’mon folks. Really?
-So, I guess THAT was Jon Moxley taking over the Superstation? Look, it was a Moxley promo segment. That’s it. AEW trying to spice up it’s promotion with silliness like taking over the TV channel is just laughable. All that promotion did was hype up expectations around what just was a usual segment. Way too cute and annoying. The segment itself was fine. Mox did Mox stuff and Cassidy pushed back on it all. A good, albeit quiet, chapter in their Full Gear story.
Yay…
-Oh…good. We’re getting Chris Jericho vs. Ishii again … yawn.
-I’ll just say this about Britt Baker. She looked like she’d rather be anywhere but at an AEW Dynamite taping. Her match with Penelope Ford was fine, but she’s going through motions out there. There’s no energy to her work and no direction either. She’s totally an act stuck in neutral right now.
-Swerve Strickland vs. Lio Rush was a good match, minus the stuff at the beginning. It looked like the two guys were playing tag in the ring. After that, they settled down and delivered. The match was a backdrop for the Hurt Syndicate attacking. That worked well and helped further establish Bobby Lashley as a dominant force.
-Julia Hart is set to return soon. She’ll be a welcome addition to an increasingly strong women’s division. Heel or babyface return? That remains to bee seen.
Surprise!
-I was very surprised to see FTR job out like that to House of Black in the main event. They must be on Tony Khan’s bad side or something. Think back a couple years ago to how over they were. Khan got nothing out of it. This match was fine, but it all leads to a pointless multiple team match AGAIN at Full Gear.
