AEW is back on PPV Sunday night with it’s third edition of Dynasty. The company will put on the show from inside the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada and have a stacked card with three matches that could reasonably headline it’s own PPV event.
So, that’s pretty cool. Also, not atypical for AEW since they regularly deliver on PPV. The show is available on PPV and HBO Max.
Now, there’s something else happening on the show that’s even more important and newsworthy than what’s essentially a triple main event. Kenny Omega sits at the top of the card. The tip top.
AEW Dynasty belongs to Kenny Omega
Why is this important? Well, he hasn’t been there in a while. In fact, he hasn’t been there nearly enough for the generational star that he is for AEW. A lot went into why he wasn’t positioned as this exact guy since 2019, but he’s there now.
On this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega cut a world class, babyface, go-home promo that sold his world championship match against MJF. Omega looked the part of a champion. Dressed to the nines, articulate, and appropriately quirky in a way that connected the audience to his journey for the title. With the words he spoke and the way he spoke them, it was as if Omega tossed each AEW fan one by one into a bag, slung it over his shoulder, and started walking to Dynasty. The fans are tied into his journey now. Yes, they obviously want to see a great Omega match, but what they really want is to see Omega win.
Outcomes matter in pro wrestling. That’s the point of everything. To win. For a lot of Omega’s run in AEW, the focus has been on the match. Was it innovative, unique, or five stars? Omega is ready to deliver all of that and more on Sunday night at Dynasty because he did good business on Wednesday night and made people care.
The investment that the audience now has in Omega becoming world champion is going to make for an electric environment. The action will hit harder. The near-falls will resonate stronger. The overall experience of watching a Kenny Omega match will be enhanced.
Unfortunately, Omega just isn’t going to win the big one here. As the heel, MJF has played his role pristinely opposite Omega and has plenty of momentum that he can roll into future opponents as the champion. With All In taking place later this year at Wembley Stadium in London, MJF as the hated villain against hometown hero, Will Ospreay, is a likely direction Tony Khan will take things. MJF needs the belt for that one. That means he has to win here and he will. Expect a classic, though.
Oh, hey, tag teams!
Outside of the world title match at Dynasty, the men’s tag team titles are getting a nice shine. FTR will defend their belts against Adam Copeland and Christian Cage. The feud between these two teams goes all the way back to last year and both sides have been able to build a blood rivalry that’s worthy of the spot the match has on the card.
Copeland and Cage are missing something together. The concept of them as a team is nostalgia driven, but they haven’t acted together in a way that harnesses the charm of their old team. There’s being different and present in the current form of the characters, which I understand and is what Cope and Cage would argue they are leaning into. In reality, that attempt comes across as needlessly running away from the exact nostalgia they want fans to invest in.
Still, I’m expecting Copeland and Cage to get a feel good victory in Canada and become tag champions. Not only does a win setup a rematch with FTR, but it lines up a Cope/Cage vs. Young Bucks showdown later this year.
Will Ospreay is back on PPV
The bloodiest blood feud of the event comes in the form of Jon Moxley vs. Will Ospreay. Yes, Moxley has flirted with being a babyface inside of his heel Death Rider group recently, but working with Ospreay pushed him right back over to the heel side of things. This match will be as wild as you think it’ll be. Ospreay is back on PPV for AEW and that means money.
As for who wins? Well, Ospreay pinned Moxley on AEW Dynamite this week. A red herring or a sign of things to come? I didn’t like that booking because it took away some of the drama regarding the outcome on PPV. However, with Ospreay seemingly lined up a for a huge summer, it would be silly for him to lose his first feud since returning from neck surgery. He’ll lock down the win.
