AEW presents the eighth edition of Double or Nothing on Sunday night from inside Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
To be bald, or not to be bald. That is the question.
Per the norm, Tony Khan has loaded up this show with some stellar in-ring talents, which will, per the norm, lead to AEW fans being glad they shelled out their hard-earned $50 for the event. The main event of the show is Darby Allin vs. MJF for the AEW Men’s World Championship AND MJF’s hair.
Hair vs. Title
It’s a pro wrestling classic. Hair vs. something. The Allin vs. MJF match itself is a gem and one that AEW has been building up since the very beginning of it’s inception. Allin and MJF are polar opposite characters, but also AEW icons with deep roots in the company. Is a hair match too comedic for these guys?
That’s my main gripe. Darby Allin has nearly killed himself on multiple occasions working to defend his world title and the hook to do it again against MJF is so he can shave his head? Too silly if you ask me.
The Darby Allin title run has been a breath of fresh air for AEW. Allin has been a serious champion that has put his body through various levels of hell to keep his belt. Allin wanting to take MJF into those dangerous deep waters is an important, but missing narrative. That should be the focus of the feud and instead it’s on hair.
This match isn’t going to be bad. It’s likely going to be a an epic contest and I shudder to think what big bump Allin is going to take. Both guys are too good to trot a stinker out there. The question is whether or not that epic contest is for the right reasons and with the correct context. It isn’t.
With that said, the Allin title run has built to this moment. Burning it at both ends is going to end badly for Allin — just like MJF said. And new. MJF will walk out as the world champion again.
Who will quit?
Elsewhere on the card, Tony Khan built in a violent stipulation that makes perfect sense. FTR vs. Adam Copeland and Christian Cage. AEW Men’s World Tag Team Championships. “I Quit” Street Fight. This has all the appropriate context violence needs.
These two teams have feuded for months and terrorized the other physically and emotionally. That feud has earned this stipulation. Get ready for lots of blood, drama, and pain.
With The Young Bucks on the AEW roster and The Motor City Machine Guns and New Day rumored to be signing soon, it makes no sense to end the Copeland and Cage run as a team. It hasn’t been a home run of nostalgia, but it’s worked well enough to keep going with it. Cope and Cage against The Bucks, MCMG, and New Day are all worthwhile matches to do with Cope and Cage, so they need to remain a team. They’ll get the big victory and win the tag titles for the first time in over two decades.
Match of the night
The card rounds out with a couple fantastic matches. Kazuchika Okada vs. Konosuke Takeshita in an inner Don Callis match for the AEW International Championship has been marinating for a while and will pay itself off at Double or Nothing. That’s the match of the night pick and Takeshita gets his win back against his faction foe.
Plus, the Owen Hart Cup Tournament begins at Double or Nothing and one of the men’s first round matches is appointment viewing. Will Ospreay vs. Samoa Joe? Dream match. Ospreay is the leading man for AEW right now and heading into All In this summer. He’s got a chance to show out in this to kickstart his journey in the best way possible. He undoubtedly wins this one to advance.
