I’ll stop with my Dickens characterization of WWE’s 2025 Royal Rumble build with my Weird Al like parody of the longest run-on sentence to open his classic A Tale of Two Cities — a novel set in a world that had no middle ground, you either were for or against the upheaval of the French society.
Are we sure?
Obviously wrestling is fun and never that serious, but the perspective of one idea is perfect and the other the worst thing ever is something all of us can understand in today’s world. What is the point I'm trying to make here? It's this. Are we sure that the men’s Rumble match is going to be so much better than the women’s Rumble match this year?
The surface level answer is, yes, the men’s match has gotten so much more oxygen in promo time and placement on the show. Not to mention it will certainly be the final match of the night. The women’s match has had little in terms of story and only Charlotte Flair’s announcement of entering feels on par with the likes of Cena, Punk, Roman, Seth, Drew, Sami, Jey, Penta, Breaker and even Logan Paul.
But, I ask you, is having 15 of your 30 biggest participants the best recipe to have a compelling match? Sure, Joe Hendry popping up in the Rumble will be fun, but that 12-21 range is going to be really soft in terms of star power. The true story of the men’s match will first be who is one & two and whether or not they can they go the distance. The second story will be who the final four are and who the ultimate winner is. That only covers maybe 15 minutes of an hour plus match. Color me skeptical, but this one is primed to have a boring, soft middle of the match.
Great expectations
The women’s match on the other hand has almost no expectations (maybe I should have picked Great Expectations by Dickens as the characterization now that I think about it). It also has the opportunity to surprise and delight with fun entrants and huge comebacks. The lack of talk about Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, and Jade Cargill coming back; on top of the likelihood that fans will almost certainly have one of the NXT big four make it to the final four, makes for intriguing and surprising possibilities. I also haven't mentioned Jordynne Grace, who will certainly be a big story of the night, regardless of whether or not she wins.
Will all of the above happen in the women’s match? Certainly not. But, almost all of us could book the men’s match if we sat down for two hours. The options with the women’s match are almost endless and could be a time stamp for a new era of that division — something that is sorely needed.
