Can a show headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins be a B-show?
WWE isn’t going to change course on hosting two nights of major shows like WrestleMania and SummerSlam, but if you ask me, they have to even out the star power each night to make that strategy as impactful as possible.
Night one of WWE SummerSlam 2026 is in the books and it was a show that not only included huge matches like Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk and Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar, but it also was highlighted by a heck of an opening contest between Liv Morgan and Iyo Sky.
SummerSlam night two is main-evented by the Rollins and Reigns match, but then the star power falls off a steep cliff.
Reigns and Rollins have been obnoxious during the build to this match. Neither guy is very likable and all they’ve done for weeks is run down the other for various reasons. According to Rollins, Reigns sucks at wrestling. For Reigns, Rollins is a tier two player. I guess people are supposed to care about their match more because those points were emphasized? That’s not how this works.
The good thing for WWE is that Reigns and Rollins builds itself because of their history together. Could the story for this have been better? No question, but The Shield still plays.
Fans care about these guys for the solo career’s they’ve had, but they also have invested deeply in The Shield lore. That’s the safety net for WWE and it’s frayed because of how much use it’s gotten lately because of this program.
Roman Reigns is going to win this match, but the question is … how? Does he win straight up and finally beat Rollins? Or does he win, beat Rollins, but do it because The Bloodline helps him?
The latter finish protects Rollins most. It also allows for The Bloodline to fully embrace being bad guys again. Keep an eye on Solo Sikoa. Heel turn incoming.
The other featured match of the night is Chad Gable vs. Penta for the WWE Men’s Intercontinental Championship. Gable is going to win this bout, win the title, and have a “moment” in front of the Minneapolis crowd. There is so much money left on the table, though.
How is Gable not working a real heel in this? Instead of an audience lined up for Gable to beat someone like Ethan Page, they’re lined up for him to beat another favorite in Penta. It’s nonsensical, but as mentioned in the night one preview, babyface vs. babyface is a theme this year. It’s all over the show — including Rollins vs. Reigns to a certain extent.
Opportunity cost. Gable and Penta is going to be great, but what did WWE lose with Gable by not booking his opponent properly?
Ok, the rest of the card is rounded out by a WWE Women’s Championship ladder match, Danhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio, and two other mid-card matches — Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor and Trick Williams vs. Baron Corbin for the WWE Men’s United States Championship. Both matches easily could be excellent, but mid-card is mid-card.
